About Marieke

Marieke van den Enden is originally from the Netherlands, where she grew up riding and competing horses in both dressage and showjumping. As a young rider her horse was stabled with a family friend who ran a rehabilitation facility and she became aware of the links between behavioural issues, loss of competition performance and undiagnosed physical pain, especially in the mouth. She became passionate about a career in equine dentistry and the vital part it plays in whole-horse health and performance.

Now happily living in New Zealand, Marieke set up her Dental Vet practice in Canterbury in 2013 - having a young family has seen her take a step back from competing her own horses, but she retains a huge interest in NZ equestrian sport. Marieke understands the importance of having your equestrian partner at optimum health, and is passionate about providing top quality ongoing dental care for your horse.

Along with performance horses, Marieke also treats many pleasure horses, minis, donkeys and zoo animals. A recognised authority in equine dentistry, she is a regular presenter at clinics and workshops for horse owners, riders and coaches, as well as tutoring and educating fellow vets through accredited continued education.

the procedure

A thorough history and physical examination of your horse will be taken so that Marieke can form a ‘whole horse’ assessment. Sedation is essential to keep the head, mouth and tongue very still for in-depth examination. A powerful speculum light, mirror, and/or dental endoscope is then used to closely examine all teeth, gums and soft tissue - similar to the kind of check-up you have with your own dentist!

Regular examinations are vital to ensure problems are picked up sooner rather than later - many people are pleasantly surprised to find that procedures for early treatment and prevention are minimally invasive and very affordable.

There’s also the added benefit of having a veterinarian with advanced qualifications in equine dentistry - no more doubling up on the cost of getting a vet out for sedation, and you have access to a full range of veterinary services. So if your horse has a vaccination due or needs a blood test, for example, no problem - we’ve got that covered too!

the facilities

Our brand new clinical dental hospital has been purpose built.

We use the Portasafe stocks for examinations, which are set up indoors for optimum lighting and visibility. There are excellent recovery stables, yards and paddocks for your horse(s). Bringing your horse to the Dental Vet hospital not only ensures the best examination possible, it also saves you home visit fees.
